ABSTRACT: In this prospective study, routine bronchoscopy was performed in 26 newborn babies with esophageal atresia and tracheo-esophageal atresia and tracheo-esophageal fistula (EA & TEF) prior to thoracotomy for repair and the results were compared to 25 babies where repair was done without prior bronchoscopy. Preoperative bronchoscopy provided significant information and reduced the postoperative pulmonary complications but did not alter the survival rates in EA & TEF.
