At the outset let me thank the Executive Committee of the Indian Association of Pediatric surgeons (IAPS) and each one of you for reposing faith and giving me the responsibility as the Editor-in-Chief for our Journal of IAPS.

As you are aware the journal has so far been published from Kolkata, with Dr Subir Chatterjee, as the editor-in-chief. Despite initial teething problems, their efforts were laudable not only to start the journal but also bring it to the present status with much needed refinements and improvement from time to time. However, due to the paucity of funds and the good original articles, only the case reports dominated the journal contents and many a times it was difficult for the team to get enough material to make the pages for the journal volume.

So far, most members preferred to send their good articles to the overseas indexed journals. Obviously, the journal never got its share of importance, publicity and the status that it actually deserved.

Members had now started openly expressing the need to get the journal indexed, for which one needs a series of good articles, regular publication, an international editorial board with WHO and WHO in the field, a journal in proper size, shape and format that follows international standards. Attempts would be made to fulfill the expectations of the members and get the JIAPS indexed. Professional help from the Medknow Publications from Mumbai has been negotiated. The journal would now be published in regular A-4 size with a new cover design. The number would be increased to six issues per year if enough good articles were received. Special issues for the conference abstracts and case reports would also be added, if needed.

The new editorial board has been constituted with the approval of IAPS, giving due representation to the eminent pediatric surgeons from India and abroad. It is an honor that at least 10 editors-in-chief of the known journals of pediatric surgery in the world, are on the JIAPS editorial board. Their response had been uniformly prompt, positive and warm. Many of them have volunteered even to help getting our journal indexed in near future.

It is now planned to publish the journal with review articles, original articles, grand round case, clinical/ radiological images, a few case reports, abstracts, letters to editor and the information on the forthcoming events, in each issue. Color photographs would also be welcomed. Articles would now be received on line (http:www.journalonweb.com/jiaps). Others can still send the hard copies with CD/ diskettes to the Editor in Chief for speedy processing. Each future issue would also publish articles with a theme subject. The much-needed funds would be raised to run the journal smoothly. The communication is most important and would be kept prompt and regular.

Have the early taste of "the old wine from the new bottle" and do send your valuable views to improve it further. I am sure the incubation period to raise the standard of this journal to international level and subsequently get it indexed would not be too long.

As this is for the first time that the change in Editorship has come since its inception in 1994, that too so unexpectedly, the initial re-organization is expected to take some time, however, I am thankful to the editorial team for their tireless efforts and the contributions made to run the journal from Delhi, albeit bit late. It is your own journal. Do send your best articles to this journal as the first choice.

The support and co-operation from each corner is essential. Your suggestions including constructive criticism would help us in our endeavors.
