Managing neonates and toddlers after treating adult surgical patients can be quite an overwhelming and difficult experience for most new entrants into the field of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. C. Ramachandra's effort in coming out with this pocket-sized, user-friendly, ready reckoner for residents, is therefore, very commendable.
The section on fluid management and dosages of frequently used drugs, acts as a quick guide in commonly encountered day-to-day work and will prove useful, as this is the most important and crucial problem a resident first encounters. There is some repetition in the Urology section, with an overemphasis on vesicoureteric reflux. A small note on the vaccination schedule before a splenectomy can be added. Alerting the Operation Theater and anesthetists before starting an enema reduction of intussusception will be worth adding. The contrast to be given for a distal colostogram and the technique of the cross-table prone lateral view need slight alteration. The book is packed with information on useful formulae, scores, calculation of sizes of various tubes, and commonly encountered clinical situations in an easy to read format.
Dr. Ramachandra's dedication to his profession is obvious from his hints and commandments to the residents! The handbook gives a good overview of the commonly encountered situations a resident faces and I am sure this booklet will be found in the pockets of not only pediatric surgery residents, but also their seniors, in the future.
