The book, "Balanche aajar va shalyachikitsa" i.e. Diseases of children and Paediatric Surgery, by Dr. Meenakshi Nalbale - Bhosale is a concise, to the point handbook of common pediatric surgical problems. Aimed primarily at general public/parents in Marathi speaking population of Maharashtra, it gives important information regarding diagnosis and treatment of common problems in lucid vernacular language. Text that covers all the commonly seen surgical problems is well illustrated with good quality clinical photographs and diagrams. Fluid language, good quality photographs, and precise description of common problems are the USPs of this book.
Children suffering from surgical problems are not uncommon. But the public knowledge and awareness about pediatric surgery and pediatric surgeons is woefully limited, especially in the local vernacular population in most states including Maharashtra. The book will hopefully bridge this huge gap and help parents seek pediatric surgical help directly, instead of going through common referral chain. This way more children will benefit from expert care and it will also avoid "symptoms to diagnosis to treatment" delay.
The book is first of its kind in vernacular Marathi. Dr. Meenakshi has put in lot of sincere efforts to keep it reader friendly. It is an honest attempt at public education about pediatric surgery at large and Dr. Meenakshi Nalbale Bhosale deserves all the kudos for that. However some phrases sound too alien in Marathi and may be better understood if written in English, as they are anyways in common use.
