It is with deep sorrow and pain I report the sudden demise of Prof. Ramkumar Raghupathy (77 years) formerly Professor of Pediatric Surgery and Dean of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. He died in Salt Lake City of US on June 17.

Born in 1945, he did his MBBS and M.S. General Surgery at Madras Medical College. He was trained by Prof. M. S. Ramakrishnan at ICH Chennai and completed M.Ch. Pediatric Surgery in 1978. He joined the Department of Paediatric Surgery at Coimbatore Medical College in the same year.

A meticulous surgeon, teacher, and administrator, he became a professor in 1993. He had a major role in implementing the postgraduate training program and was the driving force to establish pediatric minimally invasive surgery in a government hospital well before private establishments followed suit. He trained many numbers of postgraduates and other observers in pediatric laparoscopy and also demonstrated procedures in various academic forums. Postgraduates trained by him in laparoscopy have spread throughout Tamil Nadu even in taluk headquarters hospitals and are doing a commendable job.

He was an examiner for M.Ch. Pediatric Surgery in various universities. He was the recipient of Prof. M. S. Ramakrishnan's Oration of the IAPS.

With the help of Rotary and other charitable organizations, he built a neonatal surgical unit with warmers and ventilators in the government hospital. He continued to mobilize funds for the departmental infrastructure even after retirement through his connections with social organizations.

He was instrumental in starting the PESI section of IAPS which was inaugurated in Coimbatore in 2005. Coimbatore hosted three annual conferences of IAPS in the years 1982, 1998, and 2014. He was involved in organizing all three conferences and was the organizing chairman for the Ooty conference in 2014 which was a great success. He was the Secretary of IAPS and became the President in 2005. His stint as President of the IAPS will be remembered for his compassionate and determined efforts to facilitate insurance for surgical newborns.

He organized the single theme international conference on Hirschsprung's disease in 2001, and a galaxy of international pediatric surgeons such as Arnold Coran, Michael Hallworth, Kieth Georgeson, and Prem Puri participated. It was a laudable achievement with the limited resources available.

He put his immense organizational skills to good use and aspired to dream big and implement the same for pediatric surgery.

It is sad that we lost a very affectionate member of the pediatric surgical community whose contribution to the uplift of pediatric surgery in India will always be etched in our hearts.
