Prof. Dhananjoy Basak and I visualized the inception of the Journal of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgery in 1993. Under the able guidance of Prof Subir K. Chatterjee, we put in a lot of effort to make the journal see the light of day. The hard work of many enthusiastic members of IAPS over the last three decades has led to JIAPS being what it is today.

The journal was started in the mid-nineties, and at that time, computers generally had a memory of 210MB and a RAM of 2MB.

Out of necessity, the journal was processed and proofread manually. We could not afford the services of a professional proofreader. Naturally, mistakes were common. Today, all activities of the journal are online and mistakes are few and far apart.

In the earlier days, members were hesitant to send good research articles to JIAPS because the journal was not indexed at that time. Today, we not only get quality papers from our members, but also we get several good ones from abroad.

Till less than a decade back, our articles were rarely cited even by our own members. In stark contrast, by the year 2021 our journal has a citation of 482 for 141 articles. The impact factor of our journal has gone up from 0 to .54 [Figure 1] and [Figure 2] and the graph is steadily increasing.

The frequency of publication is now six issues annually, and for clearing the backlog of articles, we have increased the number of pages three fold [Figure 3]. This has led to an exponential growth in the number of citations [Figure 4]. We still have a large number of accepted articles waiting for publication. Perhaps, it is now time to further increase the number of issues being published annually.

Today, the JIAPS generates a lot of interest among not only its members but also the academia worldwide. However, all this has not come easy. Finance remains a big concern. The journal still cannot afford a full-time clerk. I have been lucky to have the support of several seniors and colleagues in my editorial team who have actively run the journal with me. In this regard, I would particularly like to mention the name of Dr. Kuntal Bhaumik whose help has been invaluable to me. I also thank my family for giving me their wholehearted support and for having acted as my extended team.

The cost of publication has gone up by four to five times. With the journal being a property of the parent body IAPS, I am sure that the flag bearers of our esteemed association will take notice of it and take necessary steps so that the journal scales new heights.

Before I pass on the baton of Editor-in-Chief, I sincerely thank all the editors, reviewers, authors and staff for their active participation in running the Journal. I would also like to thank all the members who have generously donated to the journal so that the extra financial burden of the additional issues could be mitigated to some extent.

I extend my best wishes to the next team and am sure that the journal will fly higher under their able leadership.

Long live IAPS.

Long live JIAPS.
