Greetings from Dr. Rasik Shah, Editor in Chief, Journal of Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (JIAPS). I thank you all for giving me the opportunity to serve the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (IAPS) once again as the Editor in Chief. The journal was started and nurtured by Emeritus Editor Dr. Subir Chatterjee, Dr. D K Gupta, Dr. KLN Rao, Dr. Biswanath Mukhopadhayay, and Dr. Ashoke Basu over the last 27 years.
The JIAPS has grown over the years. JIAPS is registered with many abstracting and indexing partners. The impact factor is slowly improving, and at present, it is 0.54. We all have a collective responsibility to improve the impact factor of JIAPS by citing articles published in JIAPS. IAPS members should write and submit good-quality original articles to JIAPS. IAPS members should strive to make JIAPS the popular and preferred destination for quality articles from around the world. It will be possible with regular publication and shortening the time from submission to publication. The Editorial Board will work toward achieving this goal with the support of members of IAPS.
The Editorial Board is processing the enrolment of new reviewers, which will be added to the existing database. Those not enlisted as a reviewer are requested to get in touch with the editorial board. It is a humble request to all the reviewers to evaluate the article and send remarks quickly so that the editorial board can inform the authors about their decision. The Editorial Board of JIAPS recognizes the importance of the reviewers in running our flagship journal. The Editorial Board will award the three best reviewers during the annual conference of IAPS. All the reviewers will be sent e-certificates of appreciation for their commitment toward the JIAPS.
Managing finances are crucial to operating any journal. The journal currently runs on contributions received from IAPS, subscriptions by individuals/institutes and donations from esteemed members of IAPS. The Editorial Board intends to make the JIAPS self-sufficient in the subsequent years by increasing the revenue. It can be achieved with the support of all the members of IAPS. The Editorial Board requests all members to motivate their institutes to subscribe to the journal. A significant sum of the expense can be taken care of when the number of subscribers increases to more than 400; the journal can become self-sufficient. The second source of income can be through advertisements in the journal. The editorial board will publish the details of the advertisement in JIAPS in the following weeks. The Editorial Board will recognize and felicitate members who contribute more than Rs. 50k in the financial year through advertisements or donations.
The world is moving toward a paperless and sustainable mode of communication; IAPS should not lag behind in this green initiative. JIAPS should be converted to an e-journal as an environment-friendly initiative. Those who wish to have a physical copy can subscribe to the journal at a nominal cost. The money saved can be utilized to develop software for the members of IAPS or any other crucial projects.
JIAPS/IAPS is planning to organize a workshop on “Planning of clinical/experimental research and writing quality articles.” In addition, writers and statisticians will be also on board who will be available at pre-determined charges. The quality of articles should improve using this facility which will improve the impact factor.
Many members of IAPS have recommended changing the journal name: from JIAPS to the Indian Journal of Pediatric Surgery (IJPS). As the journal publishes articles by authors globally, IJPS sounds more appropriate. The Executive Committee and the members of IAPS should thoughtfully consider this proposal in the Annual GBM of next year.
The Editorial Board of JIAPS will actively work on social media presence. Dr. Kirti Rathod, one of the editorial secretaries of the new editorial board, has already created the Facebook page of JIAPS. All members are requested to subscribe to the Facebook page and popularize it with all medicos. The Editorial Board intends to have snippets of articles on this page. Tech-savvy members of IAPS should come forward and help the Editorial Board to promote JIAPS on social media. All those who work for JIAPS will be recognized appropriately.
IAPS can make the JIAPS a popular destination for quality articles. We look forward to having your continuous blessings and support.
